Avalanche
An avalanche is a mass of loosely packed snow that begins moving downwards (and moves at least 50m) with a piece of falling rock or ice. The most destructive is a powder avalanche, although other types of avalanches include the wet avalanche, slab avalanche and ground avalanche; in the Karkonosze Mts. hikers and off-piste skiers may come across slab avalanches and ground avalanches in early spring

EUROPEAN AVALANCHE HAZARD SCALE

Scale

Danger

probability

Indications to skiers, day-trippers and mountaineers

Low

Triggering is possible only with high additional loads on a few very steep extreme slopes. Only a few small natural avalanches (sluffs) possible.

Generally favourable conditions for ski-trips

Moderate

Triggering is possible with high additional loads, particularly on the steep slopes. Large natural avalanches not likely

Favourable conditions for ski-trips but it is necessary to adequately consider dangerous local zones

Considerable

Triggering is possible, sometimes even with low additional loads. In certain conditions, medium and occasionally large sized natural avalanches may occur

The possibility of ski-trips is limited and a good local evaluation is necessary

High

Triggering is probable even with low additional loads on many steep slopes. In some conditions, frequent medium or large sized natural avalanches are likely

The possibility of ski-trips is very limited and an high quality local evaluation is necessary

Very high

Numerous large natural avalanches are likely, even on moderately steep terrain

Ski-trips are generally impossible
